Dog Training FAQ
What age should I start training my dog?
We often get asked, "When is it recommended to start training your new furry family member?" The answer is right away! You can start by setting up a routine for them in your home and, without overwhelming them, introducing them to people, sights, and sounds. I want my dog to be able to play with other dogs - can you train them to be social?
It is critical to work on early socialization with your pup. Socialization involves learning how to interact appropriately in social situations with people, dogs and their environment. There is not just one way to teach a dog to be social, as it is through positive associations and experiences as your pup grows and develops. Being social does not come with cues or commands that we teach our dogs, but it comes with interactions and exposure to everything and anything at different points in a dog's life. Introducing too much too fast can cause flooding (flooding, in dog training, can lead to your pup being overwhelmed by prolonged exposure to a certain stimulus). If we introduce too much too soon, it can cause fear and panic with that specific stimulus. Introducing dogs to little events at a time will be crucial. We want to create positive associations across all experiences our dogs have.
