Rain or Shine at MAI? Our Extreme Weather Procedures

As the rain and snow approach, you might wonder what our procedure for taking your pet out for walks in less-than-ideal weather entails. With dangerous thunderstorms in the summer and frigid blizzards in the winter keeping us inside, we must extend this caution for your pets as well. Lightning nearby can be unpredictable. Heat waves are scorching to unprotected skin. The cold winter winds and snow piling up on our grass yards can freeze pups’ exposed paws and snouts. In this blog, we will show you how we handle extreme weather during your pet’s stay.

Exercising Caution

The moment we get an emergency weather alert, we exercise caution when bringing any dogs outside. If there is any thunder heard outside, we bring all pets inside until it passes, no exceptions. It is best to stay inside a shelter that can safely disperse any strikes. We then continue activities indoors to ensure your furry friend gets the exercise and socialization expected while staying safe. Extreme cold can also pose dangers to certain breeds. Putting on a warm jacket, letting them out for shorter periods for a potty walk, and then finishing their activity inside keeps them comfortable. However, every resident at the Inn is unique, so we consider how they feel with the cold, or heat, and adjust their accommodation as needed.

Drying Off

Not all rain showers are dangerous, however. If it’s raining during a playtime or group session, we check to see how your pet likes it, and if they don’t mind, we’ll continue. But much like how we would after a pool session, we dry off your pup with a clean towel afterwards to make sure they are warm and cozy in their suite while they rest. We even offer Scruff 2 Fluff add-on service for group dogs to keep them fresh and fluffy before you pick them up at the end of the day!

High and Low Temps

Extreme heat and cold temperatures can make anyone feel uncomfortable going outside. We make sure to pay close attention to your specific pup’s needs and comfort level. This includes putting on their jacket during the winter to keep them toasty outside. While some pets are more sensitive to the extreme weather like the frigid winter, some dogs love it. Our huskies and malamutes thrive in the cold and love playing in the snow too! Like the cold, the heat can cause issues too. We make a note of the dogs that are sensitive to the heat too. We only bring them outside for potty walks briefly during heat waves while closely monitoring stress levels. Then we continue their playtime in one of our indoor playsuites while staying cool in the AC.
