Lucky Dogs in NJ

Humans of Irish descent, or even those who just want an excuse to have fun, are excited about the upcoming St. Patrick’s Day holiday. They may think they are lucky dogs for being able to eat corned beef and cabbage or drink shamrock shakes, but what about Irish dogs?

Irish dogs? Are there really that many?

There are nine Irish dog breeds (but none have green fur):

  • Irish setter
  • Irish terrier
  • Irish wolfhound
  • Irish water spaniel
  • Irish red & white setter
  • Kerry beagle
  • Glen of Imaal terrier
  • Kerry blue
  • Wheaten

So what will these Irish dogs do for fun? There are two upcoming AKC dog shows in New Jersey, one at Somerset Hills Kennel Club in Bridgewater, NJ and another in Clifton, NJ at the Staten Island Companion Dog Training Club.

Dog shows are a great way to see many breeds of dogs and what they can do, and they can be an opportunity to start training your own dog to participate. The AKC has everything you need to know about getting started.

In the meantime though, celebrate with your Irish dog by turning them into a leprechaun. After all, they’re worth even more than a pot of gold, and we’re lucky to have them. If you’ve got a picture of your dog in costume, even better–share it with us on social media.
