The phrase “sleep like a dog” puts a canine spin on that old idiom about getting a good night’s rest. But if you want your dog to sleep like a dog, it’s important to think about what type of bed is best for their needs (unless you’ve decided to let your dog sleep with you).
There are many factors to consider when choosing a bed, such as: medical issues; dog sleeping positions; how much they move around at night; and whether you need a bed for multiple dogs to share or if they each need their own. You want them to have enough room to curl up in bed and be comfortable and warm.
You’ll also need to consider the size not just relative to your dog, but also your home – where will the bed go and how often are you willing to clean it? You want to make sure the cover isn’t too big to fit in your washing machine.
You will have a lot of options when it comes to the type of bed for your dog:
- Mats
- Hammock
- Loose-fill
- Foam, egg-crate foam, memory foam and mattress beds
You can always ask your veterinarian for recommendations, especially if they know your dog well.
